How it arrives

What comes in the package: three layers, ready to apply

Layers of a die cut vinyl graphic An exploded view of three stacked sheets. On top, clear transfer tape. In the middle, the cut vinyl letters OPEN with the waste removed. At the bottom, the white backing paper. OPEN 1 2 3
Exploded view, not to scale. The three layers ship pressed together, flat.
  1. Transfer tapeA clear or paper tape over the face of the letters. It holds every letter at the spacing you approved while you put it on. You peel it off last.
  2. Your vinyl, cut and weededOracal 751C cast vinyl, cut to your design. The waste between and inside the letters is already removed, so only your design is left.
  3. Backing paperThe release liner that carries the adhesive side of the vinyl. Peel it away just before you apply the graphic.

What cut vinyl can do

Production limits, and when to choose a printed graphic

Smallest detail we cut

3/4 inminimum letter height
1/16 inminimum line or stroke

Below these sizes the vinyl will not weed cleanly or hold to the surface. Vector Studio flags letters and lines that are too small.

  • Solid colors: one per layer, up to four layered
  • Lettering, numbers, logos and simple shapes
  • Reverse cut for the inside of glass, no extra charge

What cut vinyl can’t do

  • Gradients or fades
  • Photos
  • Drop shadows and glows
  • Textures
  • Hairline script at small sizes

For those, choose a full-color printed graphic: wall decals, window graphics or vehicle graphics.

Lettering with rules

Boats

Boat registration numbers

FL 1234 AB
  • Plain, vertical block characters, at least 3 inches tall
  • A color that contrasts with the hull
  • On both sides of the forward half of the boat, reading left to right
  • A space or hyphen between the groups: FL 1234 AB or FL-1234-AB
  • In Florida, the validation decal goes on the port (left) side, within 6 inches of the number

A number like FL 1234 AB at 3 in tall fits in a box about 26 × 4 in. Two copies, one for each side, come to the $35.00 order minimum before shipping.

Type your number and see it on a boat → Vector sets it in 3 in block letters and shows it on the bow at real size. Naming the boat too? Make a stern name and hailing port →

Want the boat name as raised letters instead? Acrylic, 316 stainless and lit boat name letters are priced per letter.

Federal rule: 33 CFR 173.27. Copy the number exactly as it appears on your registration certificate.

Trucks and trailers

USDOT number decals

YOUR COMPANY LLC USDOT 0000000
  • The carrier’s legal name or single trade name
  • The letters USDOT, followed by the carrier’s number
  • On both sides of the vehicle
  • A sharply contrasting color
  • Readable from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stopped

A name and USDOT number in a 24 × 6 in box, two copies for the two doors: $35.00, the order minimum, before shipping.

Federal rule: 49 CFR 390.21. It sets a readability test, not a letter size.

FAQ

Vinyl lettering and die cut decal questions, answered

What is die cut vinyl lettering?
Die cut vinyl is lettering, numbers or a logo cut from a sheet of solid-color vinyl, with no background around it. We cut it to your design, then peel away the waste vinyl around every letter, which is called weeding. Then we cover the face with transfer tape, so the whole layout goes on in one piece with the spacing you approved.
How much do custom vinyl letters cost?
You pay $12 per square foot of the design’s box, the rectangle that fits around the whole layout, with a $35 minimum per order line. A 24 × 12 in layout is 2 sq ft, which comes to $24 at that rate, so one copy is the $35 minimum before shipping. 5 or more copies: 10% off. 10 or more: 20% off. 25 or more: 30% off. Transfer tape is included.
What size do boat registration numbers have to be?
Federal rule 33 CFR 173.27 asks for plain, vertical block characters at least 3 inches tall, in a color that contrasts with the hull. Put a space or a hyphen between the letter and number groups, as in FL 1234 AB or FL-1234-AB. Script, slanted and outlined styles do not meet the rule.
Where do the numbers and the Florida decal go on a boat?
The number goes on both sides of the forward half of the boat and reads left to right. Florida also requires the validation decal on the port (left) side, within 6 inches of the number. Order two copies of your number, one for each side.
What does a USDOT number decal need to show?
Under 49 CFR 390.21 the marking shows the carrier’s legal name or single trade name, and the letters USDOT followed by the number, on both sides of the vehicle. It has to sharply contrast with the background and be readable from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stopped. The rule sets that readability test, not a letter size.
Can I get more than one color?
Yes, up to four. Each extra color is cut as its own layer and applied over the first, so each one adds another copy of the cut price plus a one-time setup charge (2 colors: +100% and $10 setup; 3 colors: +200% and $20 setup; 4 colors: +300% and $30 setup). Choose the color count in the price card and it shows the total.
What is the smallest lettering you can cut?
Letters down to 3/4 inch tall, and lines or strokes down to 1/16 inch wide. Anything finer will not weed cleanly or hold to the surface. Thin script fonts are the usual problem at small sizes, so set them larger or choose a bolder font.
Can you cut lettering to go on the inside of a window?
Yes. Choose the reverse cut option and the design is cut as a mirror image, so you apply it from inside the glass and it reads correctly from the street. There is no extra charge.
What can’t be made in cut vinyl?
Cut vinyl is one solid color per layer, so it cannot show gradients, photos, drop shadows, textures or hairline script at small sizes. For those, choose a printed product: wall decals, window graphics or vehicle graphics.
How does it ship, and how do I apply it?
It ships flat with the transfer tape already on. Clean the surface and let it dry. Tape the graphic in place, peel off the backing paper, then press the vinyl down with a squeegee from the center out. Peel the transfer tape back slowly at a low angle, and the letters stay on the surface.
Can I order vinyl lettering in a custom size?
Yes. Enter any width and height in the price card, up to 600 × 44 in, entered either way round. The price follows the area, by the square foot, so a custom size costs no more than a listed one of the same area.
Where can I order custom vinyl lettering and die cut decals online?
From Brand 9 Signs at brand9signs.com/shop/die-cut-graphics/. Choose the size, colors and quantity in the price card, design it online in Vector Studio or upload your logo or finished vector artwork, and see the price, shipping included, before you order. Shipping is $9.00 when the order line totals under 6 sq ft, $15.00 from 6 sq ft and $29.00 from 24 sq ft. Ships flat. Brand 9 Signs is a sign company in Orange Park, Florida, serving Jacksonville since 1986.
Is there a bulk discount on custom vinyl lettering and die cut decals?
Yes. The price of each drops as the quantity grows. At 24 × 12 in, cast vinyl, one solid color per layer: 1 graphic $35.00 (the order-line minimum); 5 graphics $108.00 ($21.60 each); 10 graphics $192.00 ($19.20 each); 25 graphics $420.00 ($16.80 each), before shipping. The price card takes 10% off 5 or more, 20% off 10 or more and 30% off 25 or more of the same design. Other sizes and quantities are priced the same way in the price card.
Do I get a proof before my custom vinyl lettering and die cut decals are made?
Yes. Set your lettering at true size in Vector Studio, check the proof, then approve it into your cart. Every order is produced exactly as you approve it.
Do I pay sales tax on custom vinyl lettering and die cut decals shipped outside Florida?
No Florida sales tax is charged on orders shipped outside Florida. Orders delivered in Florida include 7.5% Florida sales tax (6% state tax plus the 1.5% county surtax), shown in the cart before you pay.
Can I return custom vinyl lettering and die cut decals?
Each order is custom-made to the design you approve, so all sales are final. If an order arrives damaged, Brand 9 files the claim with the carrier and works toward a refund or an expedited reorder. The full policy is on the Shipping and Returns page.
