Design tips
Why should a car magnet design be simple?
People read a car magnet from a moving car or across a parking lot, usually in a few seconds. At 30 mph a car covers 44 ft every second, so the driver behind you gets a glance, not a read.
- Letter height sets the reading distance. Each inch of letter height reads from about 10 ft. On a 24 × 12 in magnet with only your name and phone number, the phone can be about 3 in tall and reads from about 30 ft.
- Every extra line shrinks every line. All the lines share the magnet's height. Add an address, hours and a list of services and each line gets smaller, so none of it reads from the road.
- About 7 words. Your business name, what you do in one or two words, and your phone number. Put the address, hours and the full service list on your website.
- Bold letters, strong contrast. Dark letters on a light magnet, or light on dark. Thin script fonts and small logo details disappear at a distance.

Will a car magnet stick to my vehicle?
Magnets need a flat, steel body panel. They will not hold to aluminum, fiberglass or plastic panels, or across deep body lines and trim. Test the door or panel with a household magnet before ordering.
How do I care for a car magnet?
Remove the magnet every few days, wipe the magnet and the panel dry and clean, and put it back flat. This keeps moisture and grit from collecting underneath. Take magnets off before going through a car wash and store them flat.
Magnet or vinyl: which should I choose?
Choose a magnet if the vehicle is also used personally and the sign needs to come off. Choose wrap or decal vinyl for a work vehicle that should always carry the branding; it is rated for long-term outdoor use, about 8 years, and can follow curved panels.
Can I put graphics on my rear window and still see out?
Yes. Order one-way perforated window vinyl on the Window graphics page; it shows your graphic from outside while you can still see out from inside. Check your state's rules on rear-window coverage before applying.
What size car door magnet do I need?
Most vehicles take 24 × 12 in, the most common car door magnet size: it fits about 95% of the flat door spaces on cars, trucks and vans. To check yours, measure the flat area of the door between body lines, handles and trim; the magnet should fit inside it with a margin on all sides. Larger truck and van doors can take 24 × 18 in. Custom magnets can be made in any size from 3 × 2 in up to 96 × 24 in, either way round.
