Questions

Boat name letters, answered

What are the three ways to order raised boat letters?

Painted acrylic letters that go on with marine double-sided tape and a full-size template, solid 316 stainless steel letters that mount on studs, and 316 stainless letters with a white LED glow behind them. All three are cut as separate letters from the exact outlines you see in the preview, at the height you choose.

How do the acrylic tape-on letters install?

Every acrylic letter arrives with marine-grade VHB tape already on the back, and the kit includes a full-size paper template with the centerline, a level baseline and a number for every letter. Clean and dry the hull, tape the template level, then press each letter into its outline in number order. Install above 50°F and keep the boat out of the water for 72 hours so the tape reaches full strength.

What size do the letters need to be on a documented boat?

For a US Coast Guard documented recreational boat, the name and hailing port must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull, in clearly legible letters at least 4 inches tall (46 CFR 67.123). Turn on “USCG documented vessel” in the designer and it holds both lines to 4 inches or taller. State-registered boats have no name-size rule.

Why 316 stainless steel?

Alloy 316 has more nickel and molybdenum than standard 304 stainless, which helps it resist pitting in salt water and salt spray. Every stainless option on this page is 316, with a brushed finish; flat cut letters can also be polished.

Why do the lit letters only come in white?

The LEDs inside each letter shine back onto the hull, so the name sits in a soft halo and the face stays dark metal. We offer warm white (3000K), natural white (5000K) and white (7000K) only. Red, green, blue, yellow or color-changing light could be mistaken for navigation lights, which the navigation rules don’t allow (33 CFR 83.20). Put the letters on their own switch and turn them off when you are underway at night.

How are the illuminated letters powered and mounted?

They run on a 24-volt LED system. Each order includes the power supply, 10-foot lead wires, threaded studs with standoffs and a full-size drilling pattern. Drilling, sealing and wiring should be done by your boatyard or a marine electrician following ABYC E-11, with the power supply in a dry space away from engine and fuel compartments.

Can I use any font?

Choose from the fonts in the designer. Each product has a minimum stroke width: 1/8 inch for flat cut acrylic and flat stainless, 3/8 inch for raised stainless and 1 inch for lit letters. The designer measures the thinnest stroke of the font at your height and tells you if it is too thin, with the height that would work. Thin script fonts are not offered, because every letter is cut as its own piece.

How is the price worked out?

Each letter is priced by its height, the material and the thickness or depth you choose. Lowercase letters cost a little less than capitals, and on acrylic and flat stainless a comma, period, apostrophe or dash costs a third of a capital. Spaces are free. Shipping is one line, set by the order total. For example, CADEN’S LANE in 6-inch letters with JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA in 3-inch letters, painted acrylic with the tape-on kit, comes to $406.91 plus $55.49 shipping.

How long does it take?

The designer shows the time for your choices before you order: about 12 business days to ship for acrylic kits, 10 for flat stainless, 18 for raised stainless and 17 for lit letters, then ground delivery. We quote the longer, realistic time up front.

How much do 6 inch boat name letters cost?

For a nine-letter name such as SEA BREEZE in 6-inch letters, painted acrylic with the tape-on kit is $173.00 and flat 316 stainless is $909.00, before shipping. At 12 inches the same name is $389.00 in acrylic and $1,971.00 in flat stainless; 8-inch raised 316 stainless is $1,287.00 and 8-inch halo-lit 316 stainless is $2,925.00. Every letter is priced by its height and material, so the designer prices your exact name as you type it.

Can I order boat letters in a custom size?

Yes. Set any letter height in the designer within each material’s range: acrylic 2 to 24 in, flat 316 stainless 2 to 30 in, raised 316 stainless 2 to 36 in and lit 316 stainless 6 to 36 in. The name and the hailing port can each have their own height, and the price follows the height you set.
