How it is cut
Bridges, the overspray border and true size
- Bridges in closed lettersO, A, B, D, P, Q, R, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 0 have centers that would drop out, so thin bridges hold them in. Vector Studio uses stencil fonts with the bridges built in, and any closed shape in an uploaded logo gets bridges added before cutting, at no charge.
- A border for overspray2 in of solid sheet around the cut area. It is counted in the sheet size you order and pay for.
- True size, in inchesYou set the sheet and the letters in inches, not points or pixels, and that is the size that is cut. Letters start at 2 in tall, and bridges are at least 1/4 in wide.

Using it
How to paint, clean and reuse a stencil
Painting with a PVC stencil
- Sweep or wipe the surface clean and dry.
- Lay the stencil flat and weight or tape the edges.
- On pavement, use pavement or traffic marking paint, from a marking spray can or a short-nap roller. On walls, metal and wood, spray paint.
- Spray straight down in light coats. Heavy coats run under the edges.
- Lift the stencil straight up while the paint is still wet.
Cleaning and reusing it
- Lift it straight up while the paint is still wet.
- Wipe the wet paint off with water for water-based paint, or with mineral spirits for solvent paint.
- Do not use acetone or lacquer thinner; they soften PVC.
- Store it flat.
- How long it lasts: many jobs with care.

Accessible parking
What the ADA Standards say about the symbol
- Section 502.6: parking space identification signs shall include the International Symbol of Accessibility, which complies with Figure 703.7.2.1.
- Signs for van spaces add the words “van accessible.”
- The sign is at least 60 inches above the ground, measured to the bottom of the sign.
- Section 502.3.3: access aisles shall be marked so as to discourage parking in them. The method and color of that marking are left to state and local rules (Advisory 502.3.3).
So a painted symbol goes with the post sign, not instead of it. Check your state and local code for the color and size of pavement markings. Need the post sign? Aluminum parking signs are priced online at the size you set.

Fire lanes and curbs
FIRE LANE, NO PARKING and curb numbers
- Fire lane markings, their letter size and color, are set by your local fire code; ask the fire marshal before you order.
- NO PARKING and FIRE LANE quick starts are 46 × 12 in sheets with letters about 7 in tall, for curbs and drive lanes.
- Curb numbers are usually sprayed on a painted block in a contrasting color, so they read from the street.
- For bigger letters or a longer message, order it in pieces that line up end to end, each at its own size.

What is a custom stencil?
A sheet with your lettering, numbers, symbol or logo cut out of it, so paint goes through the openings onto the surface below. Brand 9 Signs cuts reusable stencils from one solid 1/8 in (125 mil) PVC sheet on a CNC router, at the size you set. The sheet is rigid, so it lies flat, does not flutter in the wind and stores flat between jobs.
How much does a custom stencil cost?
You pay by the square foot of the whole stencil sheet, border included: $9 per sq ft, with a $35 minimum per order line. A 24 × 24 in sheet is 4 sq ft, so one stencil that size is $36.00 before shipping. 5 or more of the same stencil: 10% off. 10 or more: 20% off. 25 or more: 30% off.
What is the stencil made of?

What is the largest stencil you can cut?

What size should I order?
Order the size of the whole stencil sheet. Every stencil has a 2 in border of solid sheet around the cut area to catch overspray, and that border is part of the size you pay for. A 24 × 24 in sheet holds a design up to 20 in square. Sizes are true inches, so what you set is what gets cut.
Why do some letters have little gaps in them?
Those are bridges. Closed letters and numbers such as O, A, B, D, P, Q, R, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 0 have centers that would fall out of a stencil, so thin strips of sheet hold each center in place. Vector Studio sets your words in stencil fonts with the bridges built in, and any closed shape in an uploaded logo gets bridges added before cutting, at no charge. Bridges are at least 1/4 in wide so they hold up to reuse.
Can you make a stencil from my logo?
Yes. Upload your logo in Vector Studio and it is laid out at true size on the stencil sheet. Solid shapes cut cleanly; fine lines, small text and gradients do not, so very thin parts may need to be thickened. Every closed shape gets a bridge so its center stays in place.
What is the smallest letter you can cut?
2 in tall. Below that the openings and bridges get too small to paint through cleanly.
What paint should I use?
On asphalt and concrete, use pavement or traffic marking paint, sprayed from a marking can or applied with a short-nap roller. On walls, metal, wood and crates, spray paint works well. Hold the stencil down flat, spray straight on in light coats and let each coat flash before the next; heavy coats run under the edges.
How do I clean and reuse a PVC stencil?
